Recent hurricanes have had a devastating impact on many families and homes across the Gulf region. If you have appliances that have suffered water damage from a storm, here are some guidelines you should follow while assessing appliance safety after major storms:

Assessing Appliance Safety After Major Storms

Important! When serious water damage is present, it’s important to have your appliance evaluated by a professional service technician before use. There are potentially serious hazards to using a water damaged appliance. Dry ocean salt water is a conductor of electricity and is corrosive. Clogged parts create the potential for fires, explosions, or electrical shock.

Things to Consider:

  • Never unplug water damaged appliances in standing water. Wait until the water recedes before unplugging. Schedule the repair technician inspection after the appliance has been left to dry for at least four days.
  • Electrical or gas components exposed to salt water will need to be replaced, as those parts are difficult to recondition.
  • Your insurance company may cover major appliance repair or replacement costs. Contact your insurance company before the repair is performed.
  • If you’ve been without water or under a boil alert, replace your refrigerator water filter. Also, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends you flush out the water dispenser for 3-5 minutes. Then, throw out your ice and allow the ice maker to cycle for at least an hour. Also, wash and sanitize your bins.
  • For additional decontamination instructions, visit the CDC website ( Visit and for more information regarding water-damaged appliances.
