Many people don’t realize how many functions dishwashers can serve besides washing dishes. In addition, there are many simple cleaning hacks that can improve the performance and/or appearance of your dishwasher. Take a look at these must-know dishwasher hacks of 2018:

Must-Know Dishwasher Hacks of 2018

1. Use lemon Kool-Aid to remove dishwasher stains.

Save yourself a few bucks on a heavy duty cleaner and use lemon Kool-Aid (yes Kool-Aid!) to remove lime deposits and iron stains. The citric acid in lemon Kool-Aid can often help break these down.

If you have some Tang hanging around in the cupboard, that will work just as well. Food Grade Citric Acid in an empty load will also do the trick.

2. Cook food?

I know, I know…I didn’t even want to mention it, but it’s a fairly popular suggestion on the interwebs! Apparently, people are using their dishwashers to rinse veggies, cook salmon, and bake lasagna.

3. Homemade dishwasher tablets.

Cut your detergent costs in half by making your own dishwasher tablets. It’s easy to do and can be whipped up using ingredients that you likely have in your home already. These simple ingredients include baking soda, borax, and vinegar. For full instructions, check out this recipe courtesy of thekrazycouponlady.com.

4. Make cleaning easy when it’s time to move.

When you’re getting ready to move, the amount of cleaning to do can be overwhelming. Use your dishwasher as a quick way to wash all the home’s light fixtures. Remove all the fixtures at once and put them in the dishwasher on a gentle cycle (only run GLASS fixtures, not plastic ones). This will make cleaning your light fixtures a breeze so you can focus on dirtier endeavors (like scraping all the stuck on food in your oven!).

You can also wash fan grilles, switch plates, and vent covers!! While you wait for the cycle to end, here are a couple more hacks to clean your cupboards and between the glass door on your oven.

5. Washing ball caps.

Thanks to a clever invention called the Ballcap Buddy Cap Washer, it’s never been easier to get your ball caps to looking like new again. They fit perfectly on the top rack of a dishwasher, helping keep the hat in its proper shape.

6. Sterilizing kid and pet toys.

You can make sure the toys your kids and pets are playing with are sanitary by running them through a cycle in the dishwasher. Place them in a mesh bag before washing in order to keep track of them easily. Just be wary of any toys that have the potential to melt (like doll hair).

7. Using your dishwasher to clean your dryer filter and oven filter.

Keep your other home appliances, such as your dryer and oven, running smoothly by running the filters through a dishwasher cycle. This can help remove built-up fabric softener from your dryer filter and grease from your oven filter.
